When you are charged with a crime, who better to represent you than a former prosecutor and experienced defense lawyer who knows the justice system from both sides? Steven H. Wetter brings 16 years of insights to your case from prosecuting and defending literally thousands of cases. His criminal defense practice covers the spectrum from DUI and traffic offenses to sex crimes, drug crimes and other major felonies.
Steve has been in Southwest Florida for 27 years, arriving in 1983 while following in his father’s footsteps as a fireman. He later attended New College in Sarasota and went on to earn his law degree in 1993 from the University of Miami Law School. He spent the first six years of his legal career in Tampa as Assistant State’s Attorney for Hillsborough County where he achieved the rank of chief homicide arson prosecutor. In 2000, he opened his own law practice, Steven Wetter, Attorney at Law, P.A., in Fort Myers where he is admitted to practice in all Florida State courts, and is also admitted to the U.S. Federal Court in the middle district Florida.
As former Assistant State’s Attorney, Steve successfully prosecuted a multitude of cases including every type of misdemeanor, before moving up to felony cases in the county’s drug prosecution unit, where he handled thousands of drug cases. Steve eventually became lead trial attorney for the drug division, prosecuting major RICO and drug trafficking cases and overseeing the unit’s wiretap operations. He has been the supervising attorney on many DEA task force drug trafficking investigations. He was lead attorney in hundreds of complex wiretap and racketeering investigations supervising law enforcement’s compliance with capture and minimization of targeted conversations. He worked closely with DEA task force officers in writing search warrant affidavits and their subsequent execution. As a prosecutor, Steve has worked with both the FBI and the Secret Service.
Steve has received specialized training in crime scene investigations and the introduction of evidence at trial. His trial experience is extensive. He has been the lead trial attorney in more than 100 criminal jury trials. Those include homicide, manslaughter, sexual battery, racketeering, conspiracy, firearms, drug trafficking, drug sales and possessions, counterfeiting, theft and DUI.
With everything he knows from investigating and prosecuting criminal complaints, Steve is uniquely qualified to defend clients in Lee County and Charlotte County, no matter what the charges or how bleak things seem.
